2004 February 19 news In Italy, Greg Dulli mentioned the second leg of the US tour. Expect 18 tour dates coming up the end of March. He also talked about recording a new EP. Thank you, Joshua, for sharing it with us. 2004 February 19 update Updated the concert histories from 1992 and 1994, thank you Daniel Fishbein (I couldn't run this site without your input) and thank you David Taylor. 2004 February 16 news With the European Twilight Singers tour being over, I'll leave you kids with this splendid review plus setlist from Nicola Caleffi from the concert in Rimini, Italy on February 12. A site exclusive. Nicola also contributed this panorama picture to the site, shot when the band played Papillon -- with guest vocals and a violist... 2004 February 10 news Good news for fans of John Curley's new band the Staggering Statistics. They play the Northside Tavern in Cincinnati on February 20, together with the Fairmount Girls. Also scheduled is a show at The Comet in Cincinnati in March, together with the Insect Clicks. Click http://nebulagirl.com/TemporaryExhibitions/clickstag/ to check out some live pictures of the Staggering Statistics from their show at the NST last October (first half of the page is the Insect Clicks, last half is John Curley's gang). 2004 February 06 update Had to close the Forum down, sorry about that. I'm not gonna lie to you, Greg asked me to close it down after seeing Colette's open letter. And I respected his wish. And while the band plays in Italy, RichieS cared enough to send me his personal review from the show in Nottingham. Click here to read it. 2004 February 03 update A new DVD entitled "Essential Music Videos - 90's Rock" was released last week by WEA and features the Afghan Whigs video of "Debonair". Check out the videography (videos and DVD's) for artwork and full tracklisting. Thank you, TwilightSymphony for the tip. Uploaded some video stills to the video clips section, too. And some other minor adjustments and additions here and there. Like I said: this site is constantly under construction. Oh, and the current European TS tour gets raving reviews. Check out Lee's http://www.summerskiss.com, he does a great job compiling those. And I'm not. 2004 January 30 update
Oh, and I uploaded the artwork for the "Feathers" single.
2004 January 28 update For the Twilight Singers session at XFM, click here... Three songs: Teenage Wristband, Cloudbusting and Black Love. 2004 January 27 update The site has moved to a new server, with a lot more space. 2004 January 21 radio gaga Radio Brussels aired 5 songs from the Twilight Singers show in Brussels last Sunday. The songs are still available in low quality WMA here. The Twilight Singers start 15 minutes into the program. Playlist: Esta Noche / Teenage Wristband / The Twilite Kid / Papillon-The Joker-If I Were Going / Layla. The session the band recorded for XFM Radio in London (UK) will be aired on January 28 in the show X-posure (21.00-23.00 GMT). Expect Teenage Wristband, The Killer and Cloudbusting. That's it. The kids don't bother to send in setlists from either of the shows after Amsterdam to any site or group. Bloody Vikings. But I love you all. 2004 January 19 news According to the UK online store HMV, the Feathers 7" single won't hit the shelves till January 26. According to drummer Bobby Macintyre, the Twilight Singers are planning a European festival tour this summer. The gang is having a great time in Europe, they love playing and exploring here. And don't forget that the new keyboard player John Nooney only did two rehearsals with the band before the European leg. It's fucking amazing. 2004 January 14 news The VPRO radio show is up for trade in A+ quality, recorded straight from FM to CD. Check out the trades section. On a serious note: the Feathers single will apparently be released as a limited edition 7" vinyl single only, with Number Nine as the flipside. The single hits the shelves on Monday, January 19. 2004 January 10 news / correction! The Twilight Singers do a radio session in Amsterdam next Wednesday, January 14. Be sure to check out VPRO radio cuz it's a live video webcast. Just follow the link to live webtv (NOT radio, as stated previously -- my mistake) on the top of the page. Schedule: interview with Greg Dulli: 22.20 - 22.25; Twilight Singers session: 22.25 - 22.42 local time. London (GMT): 21:20 - 21:42; New York / Cincinnati: 16:20 - 16:42; LA / Seattle: 13.20 - 13:42. Times are approximate. 2004 January 4 update Happy new year, y'all. Sorry for staying out of the game for a few weeks. So, what's new? A new MP3 of the week: a song from John Curley's new band the Staggering Statistics. They just did a show in Cincinnati on December 23. I probably should have reminded you, but I didn't. Sorry. Anyway, it's a great band, and I can't wait for more. More updates: you'll find some new shows in the trading section (the ones in yellow).
Speaking of shows: I'm sad. Someone with knowledge told me that the Whigs' "Live Archive" has quite a few boguses. I put great effort in compiling the list, based on fan reports, reviews, clippings, Meredith's terrific but alas gone site, etc. Take note that especially some of the older dates are not as accurate as I wish they were. And feel free to email me corrections, additions or gratuitous insults. 2003 December 23 news The upcoming European tour is expanded with a full Italian leg, according to the official TS site. After visiting the UK, the Twilight Singers play five concerts there, opening for the Italian alternative band Afterhours. Plus, before the tour kicks off in Brussels, the band is scheduled for radio sessions in London and Amsterdam. 2003 December 22 news flash After three days of recording with Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli is really enthusiastic about the "Gutter Twins" sessions. So far, the Twins have recorded five songs. Greg Dulli on all instruments plus vocals, Mark Lanegan concentrates on vocals. Guests include Petra Haden on vocals and Mathias Schneeberger on keyboard. Greg says: "It's the Everly Brothers from hell". No release date set, and no record company in the picture, but expect a release somewhere in 2004. 2003 December 21 update One Little Indian has confirmed the release of "Feathers" as the second UK single taken from Blackberry Belle. Although sources mention "Number Nine" as one of the extra tracks, the company hasn't confirmed any B-sides yet. Release is set for mid-January. Thank you, Gerald for pointing it out. 2003 December 19 update No new MP3 of the week, something controversial instead. The trailer for the banned bootleg DVD, shot live at the Southgate house in Newport, KY. some great live footage here, but only halfway through Teenage Wristband. For those of you who missed it on Summer's Kiss, here it goes. After you've seen this, you understand why the band took action. It's good.... Make sure to check out the European leg of the TS tour. 2003 December 18 update Added a forum to the site. A shitty Bravenet for the moment with a 250 entries max, but I'm moving this schiz up to another server and hope to offer a proper forum there. One without pop-ups or adds. Added some extra info on the Love Cowboys' Bigpaw album (Greg sings backup to one song). So what, you think? Well, it took me 4 years to hunt down the artwork and the complete track listing. It's in the Odds and Ends in the discography. Plus: the definitive European leg of the TS tour. Some changes were made in Ireland, and all of the ticket prices have been included. No word on support acts, though. 2003 December 12 update With the US version of Mark Lanegan's "Here Comes hat Weird Chill" EP being available since December 9, a warning is appropriate. The US version has one song less than the UK edition, the (unlisted) track "Sleep With Me". The UK version includes both "Sleep With Me" and "Sleep With Me (Version)" while the US edition only has the latter one. 2003 December 7 update A new MP3 of the week. This week: "Run Rabbit Run", live from the Paradise in Boston, in 1999. I wanted to do another track from the Twilight Singers in Tipitina's, but my MP3 converter gave up on me... That Tipitina's show is up for trade now, by the way. Transferred my MD to CDR. See the trades section for details. Added the new Mark Lanegan EP (Greg Dulli sings backup on two tracks) to the discography, see Odds & Ends for details. The UK release has been available since Nov. 24 on CD and 10" vinyl, the US edition hits the shelves this Tuesday. 2003 December 6 news "Wicked" has been announced as bonus track for the Japanese version of "Blackberry Belle", set for release on December 17. The song already was available on the DIW magazine freebie 7", albeit in a limited edition of 777 copies. Due to prior commitments, the new MP3 of the week has a little delay. I'll try to post it early next week. 2003 December 1 news Seems like the Belfast (Ireland) date (Jan. 30) is not happening. The band is booked for Dublin on Jan 30, and prior listings stating Dublin on Jan. 29 were wrong. Thanks to Colette, for making that clear. At this moment, the Twilight Singers have no concert scheduled for Jan. 29. 2003 November 30 news トワイライト・シンガーズ 「ブラック・ベリー・ベル」 Blackberry Belle will see a Japanese release on December 17 on the Teichiku/Imperial Records International label as TECI-24198. According to www.cdjapan.co.jp, the Japanese editions is "expected" to have one or more exclusive bonus tracks, I have not been able to confirm that yet. Note the "expected". 2003 November 28 update Time to shake that fat turkey out of your bellies at Slim's tonight.
Anyway, I stumbled upon a bootleg video of the Whigs' Bizarre Festival gig (August 22, 1998) today, and it seems interesting enough to let you all know. "The Afghan Whigs in Rockpalast" (53 minutes) is available from www.musiccdvideo.net in both PAL and NTSC format for $19,99. The site claims it's an official release (no way), and it's factory made (doubtful). But it's a nice show. 2003 November 27 update A new MP3 of the week. This week: "So Tight", live from Tipitina's in New Orleans, by the Twilight Singers. An audience recording, but pretty listenable. The European tour will kick off in Brussels, January 15. Check out the list. Support acts and ticket prices will be added when the information becomes available. Happy Thanksgiving, my friends. 2003 November 25 news John Curley's new band The Staggering Statistics have released a DIY CD single with two tracks, given away during their support slot for the Twilight singers at the Southgate House in Newport, KY. The band have been recording stuff since late September, so maybe there's more coming our way. Their next show is at the Northside Tavern, 4163 Hamilton Ave in Northside, Cincinnati on December 23, 2003. Curley has been playing bass in the Staggering Statistics for the last year. Other members include Austin Brown (guitar and vocals) and Joe Klug (drums). 2003 November 14 updates A new MP3 of the week. This week: "The Singer", recorded live in 1999 during a radio session in Seattle. A number of people requested this song, since the Twilight Singers have done snippets of it during the current tour. The Whigs only played it live twice I think, both during radio sessions. I won't be able to do a new MP3 next Friday. I'll be in New Orleans then, recovering from the show at Tipitina's. Hope to meet some of you there. In the meantime, enjoy the press section! Forgot when the band hits your town? Check out the detailed list of the current tour, including support acts and ticket prices (when known). After the first Chicago show, the band have been doing a few great shows, including a hot one in Newport, KY, with John Curley's band the Staggering Statistics opening, and John, Michael and Doug joining the Singers onstage during the encores. It was videotaped by members of the audience, and there's also one or two audio tapes. Later kids, I got a plane to catch... 2003 November 9 news Reviews on various message boards reveal that the Singers kinda fucked up the first show at the Double Door in Chicago (Nov. 8). Apparently, the band started to play over two hours late, and Dulli was more Dulli than ever. I obviously don't know what was going on, esp. since the first shows of the tour got positive, if not raving reactions. Let's hope the band was just having an off-night... 2003 November 7 updates Another load of early interviews: in the press section under lagniappe. 2003 November 6 news The "Sub Pop Video Network - Program 1", containing the Whigs video to "Sister Brother", was released on DVD in the US this week (thanks Lee, for providing the info). A European release is scheduled for next week. The DVD has all the videos and extras that were on the original video release from 1991, in a different running order though. "It is a precursor to a multi-DVD set containing Sub Pop Video Networks II and III, plus a hand picked selection of the videos produced since", says Sub Pop in a press release. Those releases contain the videos for "Come See About Me" and "Miles Iz Ded", respectively. Thanks for a the suggestions for the MP3 of the week, I'll try to satisfy everyone. You all might have noticed it's in fact an "audio stream of the MP3 of the week", I have good reasons. 2003 November 5 update The Twilight Singers tour kicked off yesterday in a half empty Bluebird Theater in Denver, CO. The show was recorded, they played a few Whigs covers. There's some posts on SummersKiss from people who were present, plus the setlist to the show.. 2003 October 31 update New section: the MP3 of the week. This week: a cover version of Scrawl's "Green Beer", recorded live in 1990. New section: a detailed list of the upcoming tour, including support acts and ticket prices (if known). 2003 October 30 news Labelman Records released Blackberry Belle in the Benelux last week under license of One Little Indian (LM040). The CD has been available for more than a week now, at least in Belgium. Thanks to Tom Roovers for filling me in. Reviews on the album are raving. Lee has put a large selection in the news section of SummersKiss. I don't feel the need to add anything to those. Great job, Lee. I guess everyone is awaiting the first shows of the US tour... First show next Tuesday in Denver, special treats are Los Angeles (Nov. 26, with apparently lots of guests) and New Orleans (Nov. 20, opening act Henry Butler mentions a possible jam after the show on his site). 2003 October 27 news
Seems that the UK release of the "Teenage Wristband" single has been postponed to November 10. Mark Lanegan's EP "Here Comes That Weird Chill", with at least one Dulli contribution, due out November 4, has been postponed (to January, 2004). His "Bubblegum" album with two Dulli co-operations should hit the shelves a month later. No reasons were given for the delay. Rumors have it, that the second Twilight Singers' Chicago show (Nov. 9) will contain a "fair amount" of Whigs covers. I am skeptical, and also slightly offended if it were true. If you want the Whigs, you probably were around during the real thing and have the memory. The Singers should make it on their own, and not fall back on the back catalogue of - in fact - another band. I would be the first to book tickets for a genuine Whigs reunion, but really wish the Singers will look forward instead of back. The band has a great album out, plus a couple dozen of outtakes. Enough material for two entirely different sets. Just had to get that off my chest, sorry to bother y'all... I've been thinking about running an "MP3 of the week". Rarities from the Whigs and TS back catalogues, or bootleg recordings. Please email your requests. Now remember I can only do one song at a time, due to space limits. 2003 October 25 update Uploaded some real old stuff to the Press Clippings. Concert and album reviews from as early as April, 1990. Thank you Daniel, for contributing all this. We're probably the only ones reading it... Seriously, some really great stuff! The band playing an almost empty venue and demanding applause before playing the next song. That kinda shit. 2003 October 24 update / news
The site has been down for ten days, sorry about that Greg. In the meantime, Blackberry Belle was released in the US. Europe has to wait till November 3 for a release. A week earlier, the Teenage Wristband single will hit the shelves. The US tour will kick off Nov. 4, a European tour is still planned for January. No dates, yet, though. I've uploaded more interviews, collected by Daniel. And he's promised to send me a shitload more. I've also uploaded a meager two or three interviews myself, translated from various Dutch newspapers. Extra: for the band members on the various tours, click here. Happy, Shawn, Steve Myers, the lovely miss Susan Marshall... When were they onstage with the Whigs? Please mail me to fill in the missing links. 2003 October 13 update Daniel Fishbein contributed a shitload of AW press articles from various Canadian papers. The first few are uploaded, the rest will follow later on. Thank you Daniel! 2003 October 8 news Instead of playing San Diego, the Twilight Singers play Nita's Hideaway in Tempe, AZ on November 25. Scroll down for the complete, updated US tour. The band plan to do Europe in January. 2003 October 6 news John Curley and his new band The Staggering Statistics, are playing the Northside Tavern, 4163 Hamilton Ave in Northside, Cincinnati this Saturday, October 11, together with another local band called The Insect Clicks. Show starts around 10.30. Curly has been playing bass in the Staggering Statistics for the last year. Other members include Austin Brown (guitar and vocals; Keynote Speaker, Gordy Horn) and David Cahill (drums; Jackass, Keynote Speaker). The threesome did their first show last July, also at the Northside, and plan to do some more shows in and around Cincinnati this fall. More news: A commercial release of the Teenage Wristband single is due October 27, according to both amazon.co.uk and the BBC. 2003 October 4 newsThe San Diego date has been scrapped from the tour dates on the official site. The TS mystery track "Wicked" just might pop up on http://www.summerskiss.com one of these days. Lee is working on it, so keep an eye open. Thumbs up! 2003 October 1 news/updateAlright. So the Club Lek radio show in Amsterdam, that Greg Dulli was supposed to do next week, is cancelled. I don't know why. The management tries to reschedule, but my hunch is, it won't happen till January, when the band tours Europe. And then it won't be a solo performance but the full band. From the looks of it, Greg is just as upset as the kids are.
Update: Artwork and tracklist of that DIW freebie 7" with the exclusive Twilight Singers song "Wicked" to the TS disco. Filed under "Odds and Ends" - Twilight Singers. Just 777 copies pressed and only issued to subscribers of the DIW magazine. But I've already seen a copy on eBay.com. Happy bidding. MP3's are welcome. 2003 September 29 newsMore Twilight Singers tour dates announced on the official site. Looks like the complete US leg.
November
04 Denver, CO - Bluebird 2003 September 18 newsThe release date of Mark Lanegan's EP "Here Comes That Weird Chill", containing at least one Dulli contribution when my source is reliable, is set on November 4. The album should hit the shelves in January. Both on Beggars Banquet. 2003 September 18 updateTwo new shows and one major upgrade in the trades section: Philly (11.21.1998, 156 minutes) and New Orleans (03.01.1999, 46 min., about third of the full show) were added, the Boston set (11.06.1998) is now free of diginoise and one of the best of the 1965 era. 2003 September 16 newsNewsflash: Twilight Singers will be performing on the VPRO radio show Club Lek in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, October 8. They'll probably do a few songs plus an interview. 2003 September 13 newsAudio streams of "Teenage Wristband" and "The Killer" from the forthcoming Twilight Singers album can be found on m80 online teams. According to M80, those are the first two singles off Blackberry Belle. You have to join the TS "street team" to gain access to the site, but that sounds worse than it is. You'll be able to win some swag once you're a member. The site also shows a new promo picture of Greg.A radio promo, "The Killer Teenage Wristband EP" was released earlier this month, containing the tracks "Teenage Wristband", "The Killer" and the non album track "So Tight". For more details, check the Odds & Ends section. 2003 September 11 random blah Read the article on Summerskiss.com (from Trasher, Congregation section) where Greg tells that he and John broke into a fight onstage once? Well, that show was taped, and it's interesting to actually hear them smash each other's skulls in - and make amends afterwards. 2003 September 10 news Shock Records has agreed to release the 2nd Twilight Singers album "Blackberry Belle" in Australia. Shock is one of the biggest indie companies Down Under. The release date is set on November, a few weeks after the US and European release. No word on extra tracks. I want proof!! The release date of the Mark Lanegan album is moved to spring, 2004. Greg Dulli obviously was upset when he heard the news. Updates: A shitload of articles in the Press section (Lagniappe). Some with pictures, some old one had picture added as well. After the press stuff, I'll be spicing the gigography up with info on support acts, setlists, pictures and bootleg details. 2003 September 3 news News: The new Mark Lanegan album "Bubblegum", out this fall and with Greg Dulli doing vocals to the songs "Methamphetamine Blues" (I didn't hear them on a MP3 of the song) and "Message to Mine", will be preceded by the EP "Here Comes That Weird Chill", containing "Methamphetamine Blues", Outtakes and Extras. To be released by Beggars Banquet somewhere in October. Thank you John Curley, for compliments on the new layout and for providing the name of the backup singer on "Ready". Also thanks to Daniel Fishbein, Lee Heidel and the Congregation for the thumbs up on the new layout. No reaction from Greg yet, but I guess this pretty much would be it (Sorry Chrysti for messing up your picture). 2003 August 31 news A new DVD release "12 O'Clock High - Complete Sessions" contains the "You My Flower" video clip. Go to the video section for details. "12 O'Clock High" was originally released on two video tapes in the early nineties. The DVD brings those together. 2003 August 31 updateForget the old site, this is the new one! Might look familiar... I had the - long gone - official Whigs site in mind when I put this together. Everything is still there: discography, gigography... Both updated, corrected and expanded. But there's more. Nice links. And check out the video section for info on clips, released videos/DVD's and the film career of the band and its members. Check out the site exclusive liner note from Susan Marshall to her "Honeymouth" CD. Thank you Daniel for support, Lee for info & cross references, Mirjam for patience, love & support. Future plans: A separate Twilight Singers page, and some lyrics to the site (the ones that are not included in the CD booklets). I'm gonna need your help here. Think Big Top Halloween, think B sides. Info for the gig guide or anything else you think missing is still highly appreciated. I'll need your help! RJ |
